swords of old ages (K3)

The course focuses on the techniques of straight-bladed Japanese swords (tachi, tsurugi).

The best-known Japanese sword, the katana, was the "weapon of peace" of the Edo period, when internal strife was settled and battlefields quieted down. But don't let the peace fool you - the era before the 17th century was full of bloody battles, clan wars and power struggles. The strengthened warlords led armies against each other to increase their influence. During this chaotic period, straight-bladed swords (chokuto, tsurugi) dominated the battlefields, especially at the beginning of the Heian period (AD 794), and on the side of armored samurai, the tachi later took over the role until the end of the Muromachi period ( 1573 AD). In this level, we will deal with the two swords that were defining in Japanese warfare: the tsurugi and the tachi.

Straight-bladed swords came to Japan from China and Korea, where they were used by noble warriors in the Heian period. Although no written techniques have survived, in 2013 the Bujinkan taught the techniques of this weapon through the Five Elements Form Practice (gogyo no kata). Thus, with this set of exercises, we will learn the basic movements of the sword.

In the course of history, as the art of warfare and the armor of soldiers changed, as well as the parallel development of metalworking, straight swords were supplanted by tachi swords with curved blades. This is the type of sword that was present in most Japanese wars. The sword form exercises of Kukishinden ryu taught in the Bujinkan are practiced today with katana, but a close study of the techniques shows that they were probably used for armored fighting with tachi in hand. As a result, we master the use of the tachi through the form exercises learned at the K1 level.
